Opinion: At the time of reviewing these videos they were a great avenue into the world of understanding kata and how they may be used in real self defence as against typical Dojo style techniques.

Simon Oliver has been an innovator in this area and having trained with him on several occasions I can say that he is very capable of making what he teaches work.

He has some interesting interpretations of the kata and already admits that this series is a little dated but still a useful analysis of kata.

A very worthwhile set of videos to watch and unusual in that he did not just stop after the Heian and Bassai/Kanku series.

Comment 2007: In recent times these videos are seen as being rather complicated in some of the applications but still thought provoking. However some will see it this was as they are used to single step bunkai.
