Kenjutsu Syllabus.

We commenced our study of this art under the guidance of the Yamabushi Ryu Jiu Tai Jutsu. Since then we have added a number of drills and training methods to ensure that we develop a high quality of skill in this art as well as the practical use of the katana. We have also joined the kenseikai in Rickmansworth and study Iai and kenjutsu under sensei Dave Hart.

It is a warrior art and not form based as in some systems. We study how to carry, draw and return the sword but also how to effectively cut and use the whole sword as a weapon. Defences are taught both with a sword and also as an unarmed person. A small amount of form (kata) work is done to assist with technique development.

Initial training is performed using wooden swords (bokken) and moving onto Iaito (metal swords) before eventually working with the Shinken (live blades). Iaito and live blade swords are the responsibility of the student to purchase and are not supplied by the club due to the expense involved. However a club katana is available to practice cutting skills under supervision of the instructor.

Kyu grades are awarded in line with our syllabus documented in the members section of this website. The first grade awarded is 6kyu.

The syllabus is fully documented and members may purchase the bound syllabus booklet for £5.
